The Poet’s Loft at
514-b Central Avenue was originally built in 1890 by B H Goode
as the Gaines Building. In 1891 it became home to the popular
and successful d’orleans café. Later after prohibition
it became the Vegas Club where illegal liquor, prostitution,
and numbers running were the main attraction. Today, it is know
as a performance venue supporting arts and artist of all genres.
Haunted Phenomenon reported
includes:
-
A man in an old time
bowler hat stands vigil at the bar between the concession
and kitchen. Various workers filled with the overwhelming
need to do so, are overheard saying aloud “excuse me”,
as if someone where standing in the way, when in fact no one
is there.
-
Some visitors being greeted
on the stair case by a haunting voice that says “hello”
among other things.
-
Photographs appear to
rearrange and adjust themselves.
-
Disembodied souls whispering,
along with sounds of a child singing and giggling, have become
a normal occurrence to visitors of the Loft.
-
Congas playing and the
sounds from a piano are frequent.
-
The back door suddenly
and violently opens and slams shut on its own.
-
Sounds of people climbing
the stairs, the front door opening and closing. Chairs scraping
across the floor as if they are being pulled out give the
illusion to anyone in the office that customers have arrived,
when in fact they are alone.
-
Many different volunteers
have reported strange noises, footsteps, and the sensation
of being rushed out of the building after closing, including
the overwhelming
-
feeling of being pushed
at the top of the stairs.
-
A small ghostly blonde
female child, clad in dirty tattered white period clothing
has been reported standing in the bay windows during hours
that the loft is closed and unoccupied, by neighboring business
owners on the sidewalk below. It is believed that this is
the same child that is reported to be singing and giggling.
We hope you enjoy
your time here as much as the others that apparently continue
to do so long after they have left this world!

The
Good Doctor
by Neil Simon
Directed by
Dr. John Crawford
Curtain @ 7:00pm
$7.00 (for high school ages and above-youngsters free)
at the door
May 27th, 28th & 29th
The cast of experienced
Pocket Theatre actors include: Tom and Kristi Clark, Tom and
Tim Cooper, Mary Hill, Barbara Morgan, Tommy Hampton, Karina
Martinez, Sam Breshears, Cheryl Watkins, Seth
Wylie, Cate Martin, Andrea Pierkowski and John Crawford. Directed
by Crawford and Pierkowski. The play is a series of one-acts
based on the stories of Anton Chekhov, many very funny and some
bittersweet, with minimum set.
"The Good Doctor, of
course, is not a play at all. There are sketches, vaudeville
scenes, if you will, written with my non-consenting collaborator,
Anton Chekhov. Not the Chekhov of The Sea Gull and The Three
Sisters, but the young man who wrote humorous articles for the
newspapers to pay his way through medical school. It was a pastiche
for me, an enjoyable interlude before getting on to bigger things.
It was, to digress for a moment, a joyous experience for me.
I met my wife doing this one. Some of the scenes worked; others
didn't. The marriage, I'm glad to say, did."
